Question 1

I write every word myself. Can I use Narratex without the AI writing for me?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is worth saying directly. The Writer plan disables prose generation entirely. What you keep is everything that has nothing to do with replacing your voice: the Story Blueprint, continuity tracking, chapter narrative notes, @mention characters, story element suggestions, and manuscript analysis. You can write a full novel in Narratex without a single AI-written sentence. Prose generation is opt-in and lives on higher tiers. On the Writer plan, it is off by design.

Question 2

What does "story-aware AI" actually mean?

Accepted Answer

Before every response, Narratex reads your chapter summaries, tracks where each character last appeared, and checks which plot threads are open or resolved. It doesn't just know your current prompt. It knows your story. So when you ask "why does act two feel slow?" it already knows what happened in act one, who your protagonist is, and what's at stake. No re-explaining required.

Question 3

Do I need to set up API keys?

Accepted Answer

No. The AI is included in your plan. There are no API keys to create, no provider account to manage, and no second bill arriving from somewhere else. Narratex runs on Anthropic's Claude models: Claude Sonnet for the writing assistant and story analysis, Claude Haiku for chapter summaries and other fast jobs. What each plan includes is listed in the pricing table, so you know the ceiling before you start.

Question 4

Is my writing stored on your servers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, securely in an encrypted database. Your writing is never used to train AI models. That includes your villain's tragic backstory, your magic system, and your plot twists. We use your content exclusively to help you write your story. Full stop.

Question 5

What happens after the free tier?

Accepted Answer

The Draft plan is free forever. It is not a trial. It gives you one project, five chapters, and access to the full writing editor and Story Blueprint. When you're ready for more projects, unlimited chapters, or the full AI writing partner, paid plans start at $8/month. All paid plans include a 7-day free trial. You'll get a reminder before any charge, and you can cancel anytime from your account settings.

Question 6

What if I already have a draft in Scrivener or Google Docs?

Accepted Answer

Bring it over. Export from Scrivener, Google Docs, or Word as .docx or plain text, then paste or upload it. Narratex runs a four-stage analysis pipeline: it splits your manuscript into chapters, detects your story structure, extracts characters, settings, and plot threads, then generates chapter summaries and an editorial breakdown. A finished draft becomes a fully organized, navigable project, usually in minutes.

Question 7

How is this different from Scrivener?

Accepted Answer

Scrivener organizes your files. Narratex understands your story. The AI knows who your characters are, which plot threads are unresolved, and what happened in Chapter 12. It does this automatically, without you manually tagging anything. Scrivener is beloved for its organizational structure, and Narratex keeps that same structured approach. What it adds is a thinking partner who has actually read everything you've written.

Question 8

I already pay for ChatGPT or Claude. Why would I need Narratex?

Accepted Answer

Because the model was never the hard part. The memory is. A chatbot starts every session blank: you re-paste chapters, re-explain your magic system, and watch your story scatter across dozens of threads. Narratex wraps the same caliber of AI in a workspace built for novels. It reads your Story Blueprint and chapter summaries before every reply, tracks characters and plot threads across your whole manuscript, and gives you a real editor with chapters, scenes, and exports. You're not paying for another chatbot. You're paying for the story memory and structure a chatbot doesn't have.

Question 9

Do I need to be a serious writer to get value from this?

Accepted Answer

No. Narratex works equally well for a NaNoWriMo sprint or a multi-book fantasy series. If your story has more than one character and more than one chapter, you'll feel the difference. First-time novelists often get the most from it, because you get to start organized instead of spending years building systems that barely hold together.

Question 10

Is there a learning curve?

Accepted Answer

If you can use a word processor, you can write in Narratex on day one. The editor is the editor. Two things are worth ten minutes of your attention because they pay you back for the rest of the book: @mentioning a character so the assistant knows exactly who you mean, and letting it generate chapter summaries so it remembers what happened. If you import a finished draft, Narratex builds the Story Blueprint for you, so the organizing is already done before you start.

Question 11

Can I cancel anytime?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cancel from your account settings at any time. Your access continues until the end of the billing period, and you won't be charged again after that. No cancellation fees, no hoops.

Question 12

What happens to my data if I cancel?

Accepted Answer

Your writing stays yours. Cancelling returns your account to the free Draft plan instead of closing it, so your manuscripts are still there and you can still open and export them as plain text. Nothing is deleted because you stopped paying. If you do want everything gone for good, the data deletion page removes it permanently.
